Medications Causing Acid Reflux: What Remedies to Use

Posted by Gayle (South Holland, IL) on 03/05/2007

In Jan of 07 I became very ill with bronchitis. Before this I was seemingly healthy. The bronchitis was very hard to get over. I took zithromax and needed asthma treatments. Which made me feel worse. After a couple weeks I seem to be getting better and then noticed I had trouble swallowing dinner one night after chewing it very well, it felt stuck in my esophagus. For two weeks I ate soup and I am now back to eating most solid foods chewing them carefully. I was diagnosed with hiatel hernia and GERD. Also during the sickness and the couple months before, I have taken alot of ibuprofen and a different course of antibiotics. I recently started nexium, for about a week. I know that man-made medicine can only mask the problem. I have some esophagus erosion and still have some asthma symptoms when the reflux acts up. I desperately want to feel 38 and healthy again. I'm not overweight, actually lost ten lbs when I was sick because I found it difficult to eat well. This morning I drank ACV with water and it gave me heartburn. I took supplements with my lunch, a digestive enzyme, a flora tablet, flax, and some other multiples and I am having reflux and soreness is my bronchials and shortness of breath. Have to keep clearing my throat. I didn't take anything but nexium yesterday, and felt ok, but by the end of the day I felt dry and had trouble swallowing, like I had really bad dry mouth. I don't want to get caught in a vicious cycle taking drugs and not getting healed. Can you please give me advice? God bless you for your willingness to help people like this. I hope to hear back from you. Thank you, Gayle

Gayle: In certain cases apple cider vinegar will give you heartburn, because the pH of it is around 3.5. Therefore try adding 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to 2 tablespoon of vinegar and dilute it with 1/2 glass of water. Then take it after the reaction is stabilized. The pH is about 7 after a couple of minutes and this should not cause you heart burn.

If apple cider vinegar is indeed a problem for you take 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda twice a day for about a week. The condition of reflux should be gone.

Apple cider only works best when baking soda is added as it is an antioxidant with a negative ORP of at least - 150 mV
