Acid Reflux and Mucous Issues

Posted by Sandy (Round Hill, VA) on 08/03/2007

Hi to all, I am 55 and began having acid reflux about 20 years ago. I have always been able to manage it several barrium swallows. Here is my problem it is going to sound gross Iam having a huge amount of mucous it is really bad I went to my doctor because my Gerds is out of control to the point I am taking way to much stuff to try to get relief. My doctor said it could be sinus congestion causing my Gerds to be so bad. Anyone know anything about this. I have used the vinegar with some success. However I would suggest getting organic vinegar like braggs made from whole organic apple's easier on the stomach. my question is has anyone experienced this problem it is really scaring me I cannot take decongestants I have high blood pressure. Last comments I have alot of stress and anxiety going on to I am having 2 surgeries in the next 8 months one is cervical disc replacements 4 disc and the other is both knees being replaced at the same time. So I am trying to narrow down what could flare up my acid reflux to the point I am afraid to try eat anything. My doctor prescribed antibiotic's not any better.I will tell everyone last night I tried a fugi apple and it went away. but not the mucous HELP!!!!

Dear Sandy:

Most of the mucus should liquefy with the taking of supplements such as N Acetyl Cysteine. I would usually take 500 mg/day for a couple of days. However, most people do take lower dose anywhere from 100 to 200 mg/day to reduce mucus also.

Part of the reason why excess mucus forms is due to liver toxicity such as excess use of acetaminophen, and other drugs, as well as excess dietary fats and use of vegetable oils which clogs the detoxification of the liver and one tablespoon of granulated lecithin once a day should help clear some of that.

Some amino acid supplements I found also clear the body mucus by removing congested liver problems as the amino acid supplements help the liver detoxify them. Mucus is also reduce somewhat if 500 - 3000 mg/day of vitamin C sodium ascorbate is taken by removing some congested liver and the antioxidants of the vitamin C is somewhat antifungal in nature, but it takes about a week for the vitamin C to take effect. Sometimes taking some selenium, vitamin A and vitamin E is also helpful as it restores liver function.

As to the acid reflux, either acv 2 tablespoons plus 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 glass of water taken twice a day or just 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 glass of water taken twice a day would help. There are better remedies than this one, by adding some potassium bicarbonate 1/8 teaspoon, or potassium citrate 1/8 teaspoon also, however, potassium is generally hard to find. It takes about two to three weeks to control the acid reflux if done right.
