Extremely Itchy Scalp, Now Has Spread to Eyebrows

Posted by Maxine (London, UK) on 01/30/2007

Hi Ted :) I have had an extreeeemely itchy & flaky scalp for over a year now, it gets so bad especially at night i have to keep cutting all my hair off (it was shedding anyway due to excessive scratching and i still get small bald patches). The problem has now spread to my eyebrows. I also get very itchy, tiny spots on my face, particularly my nose and body (resulting in horrible black marks from scratching) and i get flaky skin on my face that sheds . Could i be suffering from Demodex mites? If so how do i treat? I have had blood & urine tests and there are is no underlying disease. I have thought about trying the ACV/H202/BORAX treatment, but how do i measure it? We use ml or fluid ounces in the U.K mainly. Also what type of borax and hydrogen peroxide is safe to ingest? Where do i buy? I wouldn't mind buying from the internet or if you know any U.K based suppliers, that would be even better. Lastly, would you suggest taking any particular supplements/foods and if so, in what form (supplements)? I am a 24 year old female, of black origin if that info helps. Thanks and i look forward to your reply. Maxine

Dear Maxine: When in doubt, use vinegar or apple cider vinegar to wash your head, but it is best to leave it overnight. If this is not gone, then it may likely be a demodex mites, which you need to obtain borax if you can find it. Borax are usually available in large drugstores, B.P. grade where you can mix this with a simple hydrogen peroxide. Since you will be doing this for external purposes only, try to get the hydrogen peroxide 3% and reduce this to 1% by adding 2 parts more of water, approximately. Then add baking soda until it can no longer dissolves itself. Apply this to the head for at least 15 minutes before rinsing. If you want it to go overnight to kill the demodex, I suggest using a more dilute hydrogen peroxide so it won't effect the hair such as below 1%, with the borax and keep that overnight, before rinsing in the morning. Usually my observation is anytime the concentration is below 1.5% it won't effect the skin and hair, but just to be on the safe side, make it below 1%, such as 0.75%.

If you have obtained a B.P. grade (medicine grade) borax, then a small pinch of borax (approximately 1/8 teaspoon of borax) taken only once a day on an empty stomach will do, but if only the above rinsing and other things are not working out as expected. This is done to prevent further problems of demodex. Ted

Hi, I have had itchy scalp in one specific area of my head with breakage and hair loss for 5 years. It has now spread to my eyebrows with small round areas with hair in the middle. I have been to several different dermatologists and have had a punch biopsy with no long term solutions. I have tried ACV, lavender, biotin shampoos, tea tree everything, oral and topical medications for bacteria and fungus. The only thing that worked for any length of time was an oral ABX clindamycin. This is contagious because my husband now has a spot that he cannot stop itching. Citrus bioflavonoids orally reduces itching if taken daily. I am looking for a cure, not just a short term remedy. Please help, I am tired of my scalp feeling like it is crawling. Thanks.
