Yes, there is some truth in bananas. Bananas, and quite likely the banana peelings, but more might be found in banana pulp which has more melatonin.

A melatonin (hydroxytryptamine) is the hormone produced by the pineal gland of the body and melatonin is a peculiarly powerful anti-cancer as well as antioxidant. Therefore, melatonin rich diets may help delay cancer.

However, bananas aside,

"Corn, rice, barley grains, and ginger showed the highest concentrations of melatonin, at 187.8, 149.8, 87.3, 142.3 ng/100 g"

While the research does not mentioned it, I think eating bananas might help, but the banana peels (preferably banana pulp) or chopped banana peels make more sense. At least we're not wasting away the banana peels! Hence, Asians who eat high diets of rice, is probably one reason why, being high in melatonin, age so slowly. Of course, ginger, corn, barley grains, rice could never be avoided as a good source of melatonin too.

It should be noted, that in addition, a melatonin supplements are taken before sleep, and the common dose is between 2-5 mg, might also help too.

In most cases of anti-cancer remedy, a lime and baking soda, which is 2 tablespoon of lime juice plus 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 glass of water taken twice a day.

The research of this observation is based on citation research below.
