Chorda Tympani Trauma (metallic Taste)

Posted by Craig33321 (Tamarac, Florida, United States) on 11/04/2012

Hi Ted. I had my 4 wisdom teeth removed a year ago, but since then, the left side of my tongue has this constant metallic taste, that changes every now and again from bitter, to sweet, to sour, and salty. My dentist said the nerve was stretched causing trauma to the left side of my tongue when he was removing my lower left wisdom teeth. He said it would resolve overtime, but its been over a year now, and even when I went back to the dental office, he could not recommend any medication etc. To help with my symptoms. The left side of my tongue feels even burnt, and some days extremely dry. Its been constantly changing weeks at a time for the past year. Is there anything you can recommend I do to cure this injury. I would really really appreciate it. I bearly make it through the day sometimes. I look forward to your reply.

Thanks Ted

The cause I have seen in Thailand is a common black mold fungus and a certain form of bacteria, such as cornyebacterium. The mold fungus caused numbness, but can also cause the sensation in taste changing, while cornyebacterium causes pain in the nerves. People imagined wrongly that the blood is very sterile, well it is not, and with any further infection the immune system can be overwhelmed quite easily. The only thing that is sterile is the inside of the cells, but they do get infected by a fungus and this leads to lupus. There are actually many remedies that deal with it, the most convenient is sodium thiosulfate, taken at 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon twice a day, to three times a day. This should help within a day, and improvements should be noticed. If not it probably was a bacteria. Cornyebacterium is common and can be eliminated with sound, but unlikely in your case. Borax, baking soda, and urea have antifungal properties too, but not as good as sodium thiosulfate and B3 niacinamide, the usual dose is 500 mg once a night, or taken throughout the day at the similar dose. The other could be metals found in the blood which damages the nerves that way, but not that often.

Hi Ted, I did receive my Bottle of Sodium Thiosulfate, and I read in a previous post to take 1 single crystal (About the size of a rice grain) with a glass of water (mixed till dissolved). I did it on an empty stomach. But it didnt seem to have any effect on me at all. Can you please confirm the dosage, and how much times a day do I need to take it as well as for how long? As allways, I appreciate your reply. Thanks in advance.... Also anyone else that have any experince using this product, please feel free to reply, definately appreciate it. Thanks again.

I had black tongue for about five years. I noticed once in a while part of my tongue would be clear. So I begin to watch when it happened. It happened when I burned my tongue with hot food or liquid. I am not telling anyone to do this, but what I did was to gargled with hot water, as hot as I could stand it. After two or three times it was nearly gone and now it's completely gone. It has been six months and has not returned. My Hygienist was so happy. So who knows maybe.
