Probiotics and Digestive Enzymes

Posted by B on 06/01/2007

Hello Mr. Ted I found the earthclinic website, and I am planning on trying your ACV recipe, I was wondering however, about after the GERD goes away. It is alright to take Probiotics and Digestive Enzymes, I was just wondering. And, If I take Digestive Enzymes should I avoid the Multi-Enzyme tablets with Betaine Hydrochloride?

If Gerd has improve greatly, I have a tendency not to take other supplements. It is only if the apple cider vinegar and baking soda is not working as it should then I might have second thoughts. However, in my opinion most of the digestive enzymes, probiotics might be neutral and not much damage, but still it is risky that the GERD will come back since the digestive enzymes and probiotics are often acid forming substances that the body NEEDS a sufficient amount of bicarbonates to neutralize the acids coming from them first for at least 2-3 weeks before consider such use, if you still have digestive problems. However if you don't have digestive problems, for example, then I may not need them. In practice, I take them when I need them. If I don't need them, then the conditions might not get better. Quite often changing the alkalinity or the biological environment will create or normalize the intestinal floral balance by itself, often without the need for probiotics. There are exceptions, but it don't happen that often that I need it. The worse supplements in my opinion is to take is betaine HCl which makes the GERD condition worse, even if it does improve stomach acid, the fact is the body has insufficient bicarbonates to neutralize them. You have to realize that there might be some logic as to why stomach acid are reduced, in event the body knows there is insufficient bicarbonates to neutralize them. To force the body to increase acidity, will bring on intestinal problems such as the leaky gut syndrome as stomach acids digest the intestines. I have noticed that when taking sufficient levels of bicarbonates or that the body has sufficient levels of bicarbonates, the stomach acid automatically increase without the need to increase more acid to the body. Therefore, I tend to be cautious about any additional use, and I prefer to just continue taking the acv + bicarbonate formula as a preventive even after the GERDS are gone. My thinking is if you need it you take it.
